“Sky Harbor ranked as the 10th largest megahub in the world, No. 8 in North America and No. 5 among airports with a cluster of flights from low-cost airlines like Southwest, according to a study by air-travel research firm OAG.

Megahubs are airports with the highest ratios of scheduled flight connections to the number of destinations served by the airport. The top three in the world, according to OAG: Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Chicago O’Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth International.

Sky Harbor is a major hub for two airlines, American/US Airways and Southwest. Both funnel passengers through Phoenix on their way to their final destinations.”

Why is this important to us? It means that our advertisers reach not only Phoenix destination flyers, but also hubbing passengers, who are often business travelers and higher demo/decision makers.

Famous Carpet

Filed under: Portland — Alliance Airport Advertising @ 7:40 pm 05/28/2015

It’s hard to believe that carpet could drum up a social media following and inspire branded merchandise like t-shirts, socks, and beer, but that’s exactly what’s happening with the Portland Airport carpet that was installed in 1987. In 2013 the Port of Portland announced it would begin replacing the carpet, which generated a social media phenomenon. Replacement began in early 2015, but pieces of the original carpet are being made available for sale along with a slew of merchandise which shows the teal and blue ‘X’ pattern that reflects the North and South runways at PDX.

Damian Lilliard, a point guard for the Portland Trail Blazers, introduced his new Adidas shoes with the PDX carpet pattern earlier this week which reportedly sold out in just a few hours. Now there’s talk about adopting the pattern to the Blazers NBA jersey. On May 30th, Portland will host the annual Rose Festival and announced that the Grand Marshal of the parade would be none other than the PDX Carpet! “In any other city in this country it would likely be considered weird to name a carpet as Grand Marshal of a major parade, but this is Portland, Oregon and we do weird very well here,” said Jeff Deering, Chair of the PGE/SOLVE Starlight Parade. Stay weird, Portland.

Norwegian Air Shuttle announced this week two nonstop trips from Copenhagen, Denmark and Stockholm to Las Vegas. The service will begin in Fall 2015. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has a goal in place of having 30% international visitation over the next decade. These new routes will certainly help to reach that goal. “Long before Terminal 3 opened in June 2012, we foresaw the days when McCarran International Airport’s lineup of nonstop destinations would expand to include many new and exciting cities across the globe,” Clark County Aviation Director Rosemary Vassiliadis said in a statement preceding Tuesday’s announcement. “We’re excited to add Norwegian Air’s service from Stockholm and Copenhagen later this fall. Las Vegas has never had nonstop service from Sweden nor Denmark, and we look forward to welcoming guests from those countries and elsewhere with Norwegian Air’s expansive network of markets.” For the full article from the Las Vegas Review Journal, click HERE.

“The nations skies are expected to be more crowded this spring than they’ve been since 2007, and airlines are scrambling to handle the surge. The forecast, released Tuesday by the trade group Airlines for America estimates that the number of passengers will grow by 43,000 a day, up 2% from last year. At the same time, the number of available seats should grow by 64,000. But don’t expect to find lots of cheap tickets available, let alone an empty seat next to you. That’s because airlines were already nearly maxed out.” Read the full story HERE.

Delayed flights can take a toll on travelers, but there isn’t much worse than being stranded on the tarmac for hours making no progress toward your final destination. In 2010 the Transportation Department imposed steep penalties to airlines if domestic passengers were kept on flights for more than three hours without having the opportunity to deplane.US Department of Transportation recently announced that 2014 is the best year on record having only 30 flights with three-hour delays.
