It’s hard to believe that carpet could drum up a social media following and inspire branded merchandise like t-shirts, socks, and beer, but that’s exactly what’s happening with the Portland Airport carpet that was installed in 1987. In 2013 the Port of Portland announced it would begin replacing the carpet, which generated a social media phenomenon. Replacement began in early 2015, but pieces of the original carpet are being made available for sale along with a slew of merchandise which shows the teal and blue ‘X’ pattern that reflects the North and South runways at PDX.
Damian Lilliard, a point guard for the Portland Trail Blazers, introduced his new Adidas shoes with the PDX carpet pattern earlier this week which reportedly sold out in just a few hours. Now there’s talk about adopting the pattern to the Blazers NBA jersey. On May 30th, Portland will host the annual Rose Festival and announced that the Grand Marshal of the parade would be none other than the PDX Carpet! “In any other city in this country it would likely be considered weird to name a carpet as Grand Marshal of a major parade, but this is Portland, Oregon and we do weird very well here,” said Jeff Deering, Chair of the PGE/SOLVE Starlight Parade. Stay weird, Portland.

Earlier this month, to the joy of its passengers, the Port of Portland welcomed two food carts pre-security. Koi Fusion and Pok Pok opened for business at the airport on October 10th. Each cart will operate on a 6-month rotation, and three additional food carts are expected to arrive before the end of 2014.
The airport wanted to create “more of that neighborhood feel that Portland is known for,” said David Pfeiffer, senior manager of concession development at Port of Portland. This program gives local, small businesses an opportunity to offer their services at the airport with lower overhead costs and determine if it’s the right fit for them. The new carts can be found at the north end of the Oregon Market. Be sure to check out the food carts at PDX and let us know your favorite dish!
The Port of Portland unveiled the official “Tweet Your Feet” carpet mats to celebrate being chosen as America’s Best Airport by Travel+Leisure magazine readers.
Tweet Your Feet stations are located throughout the airport inviting passengers to share their PDX carpet feet photo and up to eight word PDX story with the Port of Portland on Twitter (@flypdx #pdxbestairport) or Facebook (portofportland #bestairport). Each week the Port of Portland will choose some stories and photos to retweet and post on their Facebook page. What a fun way to spread the word about being voted America’s Best Airport and to share the love for the famous carpet!
